An Invocation for Beginnings. The best quote is near the end:
“There is no need to sharpen my pencils anymore, my pencils are sharp enough. Even the dull ones will make a mark.”
Itchiku Kubota (1917-2003) was a Japanese textile artist, most well known for his amazing work on kimono using a 15-16th century dyeing technique called tsujigahana.
I was lucky to visit his museum in Kawaguchiko, Japan and see his amazing work up close. One room shows kimono depicting landscapes from each season in a circular fashion, set up like the first picture.
Kubota had wanted to make 75 kimono like this to form a piece called “Symphony of Light”, depicting the four seasons. He only managed 30 by his death.
Oh my god oh my god, I want to get Charles into all of these kimono, but especially the fourth, sixth, and seventh ones! *frantically thinking about obi and accessories to go with*
Oh! I’ve seen this exhibit!! (Oddly enough in Canton Ohio, not when I lived in Japan) It was amaaaaazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.
I’ve seen these! The pictures don’t do these justice. They are much more vibrant and they are larger than even the largest human I can imagine. When I saw them, they were arranged so that the seasons change over the landscape, walking into the room to see them literally took my breath away.
